Masterpiece Theatre

For its August issue, Elle Canada worked with renowned hair stylist Sam McKnight. With art direction by Brittany Eccles, John Van Der Schilden captures models Jenna Earle and Zoe Colivas in sleek autumn designs from the likes of Michael Kors, Maison Martin Margiela and Calvin Klein. Jeff Brown @ S1 Digital did all the retouching and B&W conversions following John’s direction.

Mola user: Fiona Quinn – M2 Desert Sun

New Zealand Fashion photographer, Fiona Quinn is back! Today she brings us a gorgeous editorial she shot for New Zealand’s M2 Magazine, titled ‘Desert Sun’. In this outdoor shoot she uses a single white 22″ Mola Demi beauty dish with her Hensel lighting.

I get asked a lot about my location lighting with Mola as its more subtle than a lot of people are used to seeing with location lighting – that is the beauty of Mola as it’s both clean, contrasty and soft at the same time; if that even makes sense and its very easy to use it to work with the natural light rather than competing against it

Mola user: Ralph Man – Beamm shoot

German Photographer Ralph Man, brings us a lovely shoot today using the 33″ Mola Beamm softlight. Although we have quite a few Beamm’s out there, we seldom see photos from this unique modifier. It’s polished interior gives it a more concentrated and directional light, unlike any of the other larger Mola range. We love the direction and styling in this shoot…

Mola spotted: Miley Cyrus – Cosmo cover

Spotted!

In this behind-the-scenes video we spot a Mola 43.5″ Mantti being used alongside a Para for the Cosmopolitan Magazine covershoot with actress Miley Cyrus. Interestingly, in some of the photos, the photographer uses 2 large light sources to cast two directional shadows almost giving the pictures a sort of ‘ringlight’ appearance.

Here is the video with some grabs and edits below it…

Mola Compression V2 installation

This is the exploded diagram that ships with the Mola Softlights, on how to setup your mola from shipment.

This compression method uses the pressure of the black compression ring to hold the speedring in place against the back of the soft light. If the speedring turns, use the added black rubber o-ring to stop it doing so.

The spacers should be setup to allow at least an inch gap between the strobes flash head and the deflector (PAD / OPAL) to allow adequate heat to escape. Different lengths of the spacers are included for the different brands of strobe that a user may want to use with the mola. (see here if you want to stack your central deflectors)

This mounting hardware is available separately should you lose your existing hardware.

Mola users: Epaillard + Machado – Face Bike Project

Talented French photography and film-making team, Epaillard and Machado, bring us a very interesting project they recently lensed. During the 31st International Motorcycling Meeting in Faro, Portugal, they approached bikers to make non-traditional portraits of them. This event attracts some 80,000 people each year so they weren’t short on subjects to photograph!

Doing away with makeup, fashion and possibly every hint of conventional fashion beauty, they photograph some tough-looking bikers.

In fact they were all very kind and very interested in our project…so we plan to go back next year (with our Mola for sure :))

They photographed these unconventional portraits with a white 22″ mola demi and white flxGrid.
Here’s a bts video of them in action…
